Former vice-president of the erstwhile municipal council and Shiromani Akali Dal’s (SAD) general council member Kharaiti Lal Katna on Monday resigned from the party alleging that the district leadership had sold party interests to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Katna, who won three municipal elections in a row, aspired to contest the upcoming corporation election from ward number 31 but it was reserved for women.

He said when he became active in ward number 41, it was also reserved at the behest of some BJP leaders who did not want him to be in the race. He said he requested his party leadership to intervene but they did not. “The SAD has always played second fiddle to the BJP in the city despite having the strength to corner it. The BJP has made the civic body a den of corruption but my party never raised any objection. If I spoke against their wrongdoings, the local leadership never supported me. I see no reason in continuing in a party which cannot stand up for its committed workers,” said Katna.

Asked if he would contest the elections as an independent, he said he has not yet decided though many social organisations were pressing him for the same.

Meanwhile, a group of social workers on Monday formed the “Corruption Free Hoshiarpur Vikas Manch” and announced to put honest and revolutionary candidates in all 50 wards.

Advocate Naveen Jairath said the forum would ‘wholeheartedly’ support Katna in case he decided to take a plunge. People’s Party of Punjab leader Sandip Saini also offered support to Katna stating that the society needed “honest and daring” leaders like him.
