Three undertrials escape from Tarn Taran courts

punjab Updated: Apr 30, 2013 19:03 IST

Three undertrials identified as Harbhajan Singh and Narinder Singh of Majitha and Gurpreet Singh alias Prince of Tarn Taran escaped from police custody at the district courts complex in Tarn Taran, where they had been taken for hearing of cases against them on Tuesday.

Though Gurpreet was later rearrested at a 'naka' put up by Tarn Taran police in the area soon after the daring escape, the other two accused were yet to be arrested.

Tarn Taran police have booked two head constables Gurdeep Singh and Balwinder Singh, who were on duty, apart from the three undertrials under Sections 223 and 224 of the IPC.

It was learnt that the accused along with the two police officials were awaiting hearings of their cases when the incident occurred.

"The three somehow managed to take off their handcuffs and escaped one after the other without coming to the notice of the two head constables accompanying them," said Tarn Taran DSP (city) Daljit Singh Dhillon.

He said that the matter was brought to the notice of police soon after the escape, following which a checkpoint was set up in the area. The DSP said that the three accused had at least four cases each registered against them.

Dhillon said that investigations were on to know how they managed to flee without getting noticed by the cops on duty. "The police are trying to identify how they got their handcuffs removed. The role of the two head constables on duty is also under the scanner," he said.
