Minutes after he was dropped to school, little did nine-year-old Gurkamal Singh know that his world would come crashing down. Gurkamal's parents and his one-year-old sister were killed in a tragic road accident in Kharar near here on Monday morning.

The deceased have been identified as Gurtej Singh, 40; his wife Sarabjit Kaur, 34; and their daughter Sahib. They were the residents of Pakki Rorkee village near here.

The accident took place when they were headed to a village near Morinda where Sarabjit teaches in a private school.

Eyewitnesses told the police that Gurtej Singh had slowed down his Maruti Esteem car near Mammupur village when a bus headed in the same direction rammed into the car, spinning it out of control. Such was the impact that the car was pushed to the other side of the road and it collided with a Scorpio headed in the opposite direction, killing all three on the spot.

Gurtej owned a spare parts shop in Kurali. Their son Gurkamal was dropped just minutes before the accident. “It took place near Mammupur village on the Kharar-Morinda highway. The impact was such that all three persons in the car died on the spot,” Gharuan station house officer Amanvir Singh said.

The police have registered a case against the driver of the private bus who fled after the accident. He is yet to be identified.

Gurtej Singh used to drop his wife Sarabjeet Kaur to her school along with his one-year-old daughter. From there, he used to go to his shop. On Monday, he had left to drop his wife when they met with the accident.

Relative saw it happening
The brother-in-law of deceased, Gurtej Singh, was riding a scooter and was right behind the ill-fated Maruti Esteem car when the accident took place. Jagjit Singh said the three died within minutes. “We did not even get time to take them to a hospital,” he said while talking to HT. “Sahib was sitting in Sarabjeet's lap,” said Jagjit Singh on whose complaint the case against the bus driver had been registered.

Son unaware, confused
Nine-year-old Gurkamal Singh was still not aware that his parents and sister were killed in a road accident. After returning from school, the child sat silently, trying to figure out why relatives had started gathering at their house. Gurkamal's father, Jujjar Singh, did not speak after the news of the accident was broken to him.
