Members of the Mini Bus Punjab Association and All Punjab Truck Union on Friday burnt the effigy of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government to protest the Rs-5 per litre hike in diesel prices.
"With the steep hike in diesel prices, it would be impossible for us to run buses under the current fare structure," President of the mini bus association, Jarnail Singh Gardhiwala, said. "We have to increase the fares and this would put more financial burden on the public."
"The decision taken by the union government is anti-people and pro-multinational companies; it would hurt the common man," said Gardhiwala.
Happy Sandhu, president of the truck union, said the decision to raise the diesel prices was a fatal blow to the transport sector. "As transportation and freight charges will increase, prices of essential commodities and other materials will also soar," he added.
