Irked over the pathetic condition of the National Highway-21, local transporters staged a three-hour chakka jam at the Nouni Chowk, which is a junction of both Bilaspur- Chandigarh and Nouni-Shimla roads, on Wednesday.

The District Transport Cooperative Society, engaged in the transportation of cement, in association with various transport societies, had called for the bandh.

Society president Lekh Ram Verma said the highway has converted into potholes and officers of the National Highway Authority were acting irresponsibly. Recently union surface transport minister had sanctioned Rs 4 crore for the repair work.

He added the unnecessary delay to carry out the work is causing a life threat to the travellers and pedestrians. It has now becomes difficult to ply vehicles on road, causing financial loss to the transporters due to breakage of mechanical spares of the vehicles.

Additional district magistrate Pardeep Thakur along with deputy superintendent of police Partap Thakur assured the protestors to start the work at earliest.

They added a meeting will be held on Thursday, where the representatives of all transport unions are invited to chalk out the repairing schedule.
