Young women need to strike a friendship with their mothers to gain knowledge on gender-centric issues, including sex education, experts said here on Friday.

Kanya Maha Vidyalaya principal Atima Sharma, while participating in a panel discussion 'Age of Consent Reform- Offensive or Defensive' organised by the CT group of Institutions said: “ Girls must confide in their mothers so as to get real solutions to their queries related to sex education or other issues relating to gender roles.”

“There may be generation gap between you and your mother, but the latter will emerge as a mentor for her daughter due to her experience. Value-based family system is need of the hour,” Sharma added.

She also exhorted girls to report matters pertaining to sexual harassment to family members or authorities, so that the problem can be tackled effectively, before it escalates .

“Take sexual harassment seriously from the day one. Don't hesitate to report it. Be confident to take such elements head on by reporting such incidents,” she said.

Mandeep Singh Sachdeva, senior lawyer, said that in majority of rape and molestation cases, the culprits were either relatives or known to the victims.

“Let the girls, in such cases, ring the alarm at the first instance. Your confidence is vital to tackle such crimes,” he said. He claimed that in most families, women discriminated against their own gender.

Hans Raj Mahila Maha Vidyalaya principal Rekha Bhardwaj said that girls must develop the strength to deal with such issues. “There is no need of producing degree holders sans human values,” she quipped.

Manoj Kumar, director, CT Group of Institutions, said “Adoption of the culture of the western societies and their laws without application of mind will lead us nowhere,” he said. Charanjit Singh Channi, chairman, CT group was also present.
