People on Monday gathered at Grain Market in Mehal Kal to pay tributes to Kiranjit Kaur, a Class 12 student who was gangraped and killed, and took a pledge against atrocities on women on the occasion of her 16th death anniversary.

The function, organised by the local group Action Committee Against Rape and Murder of Kiranjit Kaur, Mehal Kalan, was addressed by convenor Gurbinder Singh and Narain Dutt, and was attended by Bharatiya Kisan Union (Dakonda) state president Buta Singh Burjgill and CPM state secretary Mangat Ram Pasla.

Music album Gunjan Gadar Dian was also released on the occasion. Kiranjit's parents Darshan Singh and Paramjit Kaur also attended the function. Darshan described his daughter as an icon of struggle against repression of women.

Kiranjit Kaur, daughter of physically-challenged teacher Darshan Singh, was abducted from the village on July 29 in 1997, when she was returning from school. Her body was found buried in the fields a few days after the incident.
