Distressed over being married at the age of 17, a 21-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide at her rented accommodation at Barewal Road on late Friday night.

The deceased has been identified as Anjali, a native of Uttar Pradesh. She got married four years ago and had since been living with her parents at her native place. She joined her husband in Ludhiana around six months ago.

Her husband, Ranjit Kumar, a painter by profession, told the police that he was away to work on Friday and when he returned at night, he was shocked to see Anjali hanging. He sounded the PAU police who lowered the body and sent it to the civil hospital for post-mortem examination.

Investigating officer assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Swaran Singh at PAU police station, said the woman got married at the age of 17 against her wish and had since been under stress, which might have led her to take the extreme step.

He added that the woman's parents had been informed and further action would be taken after recording her statement.
