Police arrested a truck driver for allegedly mowing down two persons, and leaving one injured, at Aarti Chowk (Prof Mohan Singh Chowk) on late Wednesday night.
The deceased have been identified as Pardeep Kumar, a Jagraon resident who was working as a security guard at Silver Arc Mall, and was waiting for a bus to go home; and Jeev Lal, a rickshaw puller.
The third victim, who is yet to be identified, is struggling for life at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).
The truck driver, Sukhjinder Singh of Tarn Taran, was on his way from Khamanoo to Ferozepur, when he rammed into the victims. Family members of Pardeep alleged the driver was in an inebriated condition and was unable to stand straight.
They alleged that to favour the transport company which owned the truck, police were concocting the story that a wooden log lying in the cabin stuck under the brake lever that caused the accident.
However, police have registered a case under section 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 334 (voluntarily causing hurt on provocation) and 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the truck driver.
