Two arrested for demanding Rs 5 lakh extortion

The city police on Thursday arrested two persons for demanding extortion money of Rs 5 lakh from a neighbour at Dyal Nagar, Ghumar Mandi here.

The accused have been identified as Ranjit Singh (30) of Prem Nagar, Ghumar Mandi and Amandeep Singh alias Jonty (20) of Sector 39, Chandigarh.

During interrogation, the suspects purportedly confessed to having conspired to extort Rs 5 lakh from the neighbour.

In his complaint to the police, Balwinder Singh of Dyal Nagar, Ghumar Mandi said some miscreants had been calling him on phone and demanded Rs 5 lakh by threatening him lives of his son and daughter. Later, the deal was struck at Rs 2 lakh.

Following threats from the suspects, Balwinder Singh, who is a dry cleaner at Moti Nagar and Sufiyan Chowk, went to Bharat Nagar Chowk with the money to hand it over to the suspects, but they did not come.

Later, he identified the voice of the caller and filed a complaint with Division Number 8 police station. The police then investigated the matter and registered a case in this regard. Amandeep Singh owns a tiny industry in Transport Nagar.

Sub-inspector Pawan Kumar, in charge at police post Ghumar mandi said the police had been questioning the suspects.
