Niraj Bala and Manpreet Kaur, faculty members of the department of mechanical engineering at SGPC-run Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Engineering College (BBSBEC) have received research grant of R30 lakh from different agencies, including All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and department of science and technology (DST), New Delhi.

College principal Lakhwinder Singh said Niraj Bala has received the grant of R22 lakh from the AICTE under its research proposal scheme to carry out research on "Design and development of magnesium metal matrix composites by stir casting technique". The grant will help develop a research lab for the fabrication of magnesium composites, which include furnace stirring arrangement, casting equipment and extrusion system. Magnesium-based composites find application in aircraft, shipping and automotive parts.

Manpreet Kaur, assistant professor in mechanical engineering department, has bagged a Rs 8.5-lakh research project, "Development of thermal spray coatings to control wear during high-temperature applications", from DST under the SERC proposals.
