In a suspected case of honour killing, the police have booked two brothers, Nirmal Singh and Gurmel Singh of the Majri road, Dehlon, for allegedly killing a youth here on Saturday.
The youth allegedly had an affair with the sister of the accused.
The police solved the case in a few hours after recovering the youth's body from a pit on Saturday morning following a tip-off from farmer Mohinder Singh, who was the first to come across the body when he went to his fields.
The deceased has been identified as Gurjit Singh, 24, from Siyad village through an identity card recovered from his pocket. He used to work as a mechanic at a workshop that repairs harvest machines.
The police also recovered a mobile phone along with three SIM cards, a purse, Rs 760 in cash and a motorcycle key from near the body. The deceased had tattooed "Paramjit" on his hand.
The police have raided the hideouts of accused to arrest them, but they had absconded.
Sadar ACP Gurprit Singh Walia along with Gursharan Singh, additional SHO of the Dehlon police station, reached the spot and initiated a probe.
According to Walia, the body had marks of sharp-edged weapons and assault. The mobile that was recovered was not in a working condition.
According to preliminary investigation, Gurjit had a love affair with divorcee Mandeep Kaur, 30, and the girl's brother were against it.
Gurjit Singh allegedly used to visit Mandeep's house at night to meet her. On Friday night, when he jumped over the wall to meet Mandeep, her brothers Nirmal Singh and Gurmail Singh caught him. They took him to a room and allegedly attacked him with sharp-edged weapons till he died. Later, they allegedly threw the body in a pit and fled.
"As all the belongings of the deceased were found on the body, we started investigation on personal rivalry. Later, we got a tip-off about Gurjit's affair with a girl, following which we cracked the case," claimed Walia.
