Two cars caught fire on Tuesday afternoon in Phase-9 industrial area of SAS Nagar. No one was, however, injured in the blaze.
Phase-11 SHO Jaswinder Singh said the incident took place when the owner of a Scoda car, Col Gulshan Sharma of Zirakpur came to a workshop for repair of the car in the industrial area. As he parked his car in front of the workshop, smoke started emanating from the engine of the vehicle and when the mechanic opened it, it caught fire. Another car, a Honda Accord, which was parked nearby too caught fire. The SHO said two fire tenders were pressed into service and the blaze was controlled in 30 minutes, but by that time the cars had been completely damaged.
Gopal Krishan, a car expert in Sector 48 said such incidents occur due electric short circuit, especially when there is leakage of engine oil. “Getting the vehicles repaired from roadside mechanics is also risky as they often leave the connections loose,” he said.
