Four persons, including two children, were killed after a truck hit a car while overtaking it near Harike, 25 kms from here, on Wednesday.
The deceased have been identified as Kirtowal village resident Varinder Kumar (28), his daughter Priyanka (5), son Krishan Kumar (2) and friend Hardeep Singh (30)
Varinder’s brother Jatinder Kumar, who was driving the car, has been hospitalised. Police said Varinder and Hardeep worked as security guard at the Chennai airport. Both had come home on a vacation and had to return to work on Wednesday. When Jatinder was getting ready to drop the duo at the Harike bus stand, Varinder’s two children insisted on accompanying him.
When they reached Booh Hawelian village, 3 km before Harike, a speeding truck hit their Celerio car while overtaking it. Jatinder lost control over the car and it rammed into a tree and overturned resulting in death of four occupants.
The truck driver fled from the spot. Harike station house officer (SHO) Kamaljit Singh said the bodies have been sent to the Patti civil hospital for autopsy. A case under section 304 (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered, he said.
