Two head constables of Punjab Police have been arrested after a prisoner escaped from their custody on Saturday.
According to police, the case was registered against them on the complaint of Mangal Singh, assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Punjab Police, Police Lines, Amritsar.
The complainant stated to the Chandigarh Police that a prisoner, Malkit Singh of Central Jail, Amritsar, who was under treatment at the PGI, Chandigarh, escaped from the custody of head constables Balraj Singh and Dilbag Singh on Saturday.
Police sources said that the accused prisoner was booked in 14 criminal cases and was lodged in the Central Jail of Amritsar.
The accused was brought to the PGI for treatment on August 3 after other prisoners in the jail attacked him and hit him on his head.
But the prisoner managed to give a slip to the two cops on Saturday and escaped from their custody.
The head constables have been arrested under Sections 223 (escape from confinement or custody negligently suffered by public servant) and 224 (resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension) of the Indian Penal Code at Police Station, Sector 11, Chandigarh. Both the HCs were later granted bail. Further investigation is in progress, said a police official.
