Police have claimed to bust a gang of robbers with the arrest of assistant sub-inspector (ASI), head constable and their four accomplices. Police have also recovered Rs 20 lakh from their possession.

The accused have been identified as ASI Gurkewal Singh, head constable Sarabjit Singh and their accomplices Kamal Kishore of Harnam Nagar, Mani Kumar alias Tinku of Harnam Nagar, Neelam Kumar alias Patil/Nirmal of Model Town extension, Surjit Kumar alias Soni of Aman Nagar.

The ASI and head constable were deputed at Model Town police station. Their services have now been suspended with immediate effect and a departmental inquiry initiated against them.

Deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Dhruman Nimbale said police got a tip off that the accused had assembled to hatch a conspiracy of another robbery near Model Gram railway station. They raided the place and arrested the accused.

The DCP added that the cops used to stop their target on the pretext of checking and rob them of cash and valuables.

On April 29, the accused robbed Jaideep Singh, manager of a private company, of Rs 20 lakh from his home. The accused also slapped Jaideep when he resisted. Nirmal was known to Jaideep and he was aware that Jaideep possessed cash at home.

Nirmal is also involved in illegal transaction of cash (Hawala racket). He was arrested by police one year ago with unaccounted money worth Rs 61 lakh.

The police suspect their involvement in other robberies also.

Deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Dhruman Nimbale said ASI Gurkewal is already facing trial in three cases, including those of corruption, registered against him in Bathinda. The police also suspected the money that he robbed was all ‘hawala’ money.

The police have decided to inform enforcement department and income tax officials to investigate the money transaction at their level.
