Two snatchers escaped from the lock-up of Dhilwan police station here on intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday after the cops on duty failed to lock the gate properly. Lovepreet alias Babbal and Amandeep Singh alias Rinku, both residents of Kapurthala, were locked up at the police station.

The police had arrested the two on Tuesday after recovering four snatched mobile phones, a pair of gold earrings and two motorcycles from their possession. Thirteen FIRs are registered against them at various poilice stations of the district.

The night duty cops, including constable Lovepreet Singh and home guard Gyan Singh, were suspended and a case of negligence has been registered against them.

Sources said the cop who went to deliver food to the prisoners in the lock-up on Tuesday night failed to properly lock the gate, facilitating the escape of the snatchers.

Police officials said a cop found the lock-up vacant during a round at 2.30 am and he informed the senior police officials.

After receiving information about the escape of accused persons from the lock-up, senior superintendent of police (SSP) Rajinder Singh immediately suspended both the cops for negligence.

A case has been registered against the two cops and both the accused persons under sections 222 (intentional omission to apprehend on the part of a public servant bound to apprehend an accused person), 223 (escape from confinement due to negligence by public servant) and 224 (resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension) of the Indian Penal Code at Dhilwan police station.

The SSP said he had suspended both the cops and assured that the accused persons will be arrested soon.
