Pursuant to the directions from Punjab and Haryana high court, Punjab police have suspended two havildars for beating up a handcuffed inmate, Manmeet Singh, in May 2010 on way to Ludhiana district courts from the jail.

Then superintendent of jails has also been issued a charge sheet for not conducting undertrial's medical examination after the incident, even after court directions.

This information was submitted before the high court on Friday during the hearing of a petition filed by Manmeet.

The suspended havildars are Balbir Singh and Dharminder Kumar. It was also mentioned that charges against these havildars had also been added for not taking permission from the district magistrate before handcuffing the undertrial.

After hearing the arguments, a division bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi directed authorities concerned to submit status report in the case on the next date of hearing, May 28.
