The police here have arrested two cousins for killing all the six members of the family of Banke Bihari Lal, a migrant labourer of Bihar. The duo had killed five of them at their house near Langer Sahib Gurdwara in Talwandi Bhai, about 32 km from here on Thursday last, while Banke Bihari Lal’s 17-year-old daughter, who was reported missing when bodies of five members of the family were found at their house, and was taken away by them to Himachal Pradesh, was murdered later.

It may be recalled that bodies of five members of the family, including those of 60-year-old Banke Bihari Lal, his wife Rani, 55, sons Kundan, 28, and Nandu, 25, and Lalita, 25-year-old wife of Kundan, were found in their house on Thursday last.

The arrested have been identified as Wakeel Singh of ward number 12, New Water Works, Talwandi Bhai, and Jaspreet Singh of Canal Colony, Talwandi Tipala uder Makhu police station of Ferozepur, said Hardiyal Singh Mann, senior superintendent of police (SSP), Ferozepur.

During investigation they told the police that they had committed the crime out of revenge as Kundan, son of Banke, had teased Wakil’s sister. As he developed a grudge against Kundan, he developed a grudge against him and, under a conspiracy, cultivated friendship with Banke Bihari and then started visiting his house frequently.

In the meantime, Wakeel also developed physical relations with Baby, Banke's daughter.

Banke's son Nandu was childless and used to visit Wakeel, who used to work in a laboratory, for conducting tests. However, taking advantage of poor educational background of the family, Wakeel misled Nandu and convinced him that their house was under the influence of a phantom and needed a spiritual cure. He assured the family that he knew of a special medicine to solve this problem.

On March 13 night, Wakeel Singh and his cousin Jaspreet Singh went to Banke Bihari's house. They asked Baby to give some intoxicating drugs to all the members of her family. After that, they captured Baby and locked her in the washroom. They also told her to not to worry if she heard screams of her family members as they would treat them to bring them out of the phantom’s influence, said the SSP.

Later on, the duo allegedly murdered her family members brutally with a knife and an axe. After committing the crime, they took Baby to Himachal Pradesh along with them, the SSP stated.

However, they returned to Makhu when they went out of money. Then they planned to get rid of baby and strangulated her and threw her body into the Harike river, said the SSP.

The police have recovered the weapons used in the murders. The body of Baby is yet missing.

A case under sections 302, 364, 376 and 34 of the IPC has been registered against them.
