Two farmers, who were reeling under distress, committed suicide by consuming poison in Bathinda.

Harbinder Singh, 44, of Mallwala village died at a hospital on Monday evening. As per police, he had consumed poison at his house on Sunday and was rushed to the hospital.

Harbinder’s family said their five-acre cotton crop was destroyed in the whitefly attack last year. “High-speed winds in the past few days flattened their wheat crop as a result Harbinder was under stress,” said Rama police station in-charge Gursher Singh. The body was handed over to the family after autopsy, said police.

In a separate case, Harpreet Singh, 28, of Lehri village ended his life by consuming poison at his house on Tuesday. The victim was reeling under debt as his cotton crop had been destroyed.
