Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Mallanwala circle president Gurcharan Singh and Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) local chief Jaspal Singh “Jimmy Sandhu” were among three people booked on Thursday in Ferozepur in a case of forgery and graft to drop the drug case against a couple.

The roles of local BJP president Jugraj Katora and deputy superintendent of police (city) Balwinder Singh Sekhon are being investigated. On Wednesday night, Ferozepur superintendent of police (detective) Amarjeet Singh got the FIR (first-information report) registered at the city police station.

The FIR is based on a secret input that Jimmy Sandhu accepted Rs 10 lakh from local agent Lakwinder Singh to get drugsmuggling accused Amritpal Singh and his wife, Jagdeep Kaur, off the hook. The police claimed to have seized 100-gram heroin, two weapons and fake currency from the couple. Out of Rs 10 lakh, Rs 4 lakh was allegedly passed on to DSP Sekhon.

The FIR says that BJP leader Gurcharan Singh took Rs 3 lakh from a relative of Jagdeep Kaur to further pay local BJP chief Katora to see that she got bail. Jimmy Sandhu allegedly also took Rs 15 lakh to save local DC office clerk Manoj Khatter in a case of forging arms licences. Manoj was booked on March 30, and his brother, Sonu, allegedly paid the money to see that the case was cancelled.

The case against Gurcharan Singh, Jimmy Sandhu, and agent Lakhwinder Singh was registered under Section 420 (cheating and forgery) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Sections 8 (taking gratification to influence public servant) and 9 (taking gratification for exercise of influence on public servant) of the Prevention of Corruption Act. “We are looking into the roles of DSP Balwinder Singh Sekhon and Jugraj Katora,” said Ferozepur senior superintendent of police (SSP) Hardiyal Singh Mann.

Ferozepur’s Congress legislator Parminder Singh Pinki and his supporters protested outside the SSP’s office on Thursday and demanded that all the accused be arrested and a case made out against state BJP president Kamal Sharma as well, since Jimmy Sandhu and Katora are said to be his aides.

Sharma said the moment he had come to know that police claimed to have evidence against Katora and Sandhu, he had asked them to resign.
