Drinking on railway track in the Sherpur area costs two friends their lives, while another man suffered severe injuries as a train hit them on Monday night.

The deceased have been identified as Sandeep Kumar Chaudhary (26) and Hardeep Singh (25), both residents of Maha Singh Nagar. Their injured friend is yet to be identified.

The friends were drinking on the track when a train appeared. Eyewitnesses said they were too drunk to move immediately and all of a sudden they were run over by the train.

Sandeep and Hardeep died on the spot, while their friend suffered severe injuries.

The onlookers informed the railway police immediately, who reached the spot and initiated investigation. The injured man was rushed to hospital.

Sub-inspector Inderjeet Singh, station house officer of the GRP police station, said the police have handed over the bodies to the families after conducting post-mortem examination. The deceased were labourers.

Five people have lost their lives on railway tracks on Monday. While two teenagers who were playing on the tracks near Islam Gunj were mowed down by a train, a senior clerk at the deputy commissioner office was also run over by a train near Dholewal.
