Two gangsters were murdered by a group of assailants near Rajeana village under Baghapurana subdivision, 32 km from here, on Monday. Police sources said a case of murder had been registered against unidentified people. No one has been arrested so far.

The deceased have been identified as Gursewak Singh, 34, a resident of Aalmwala, and Gurpreet Singh, 36, a resident of Baghapurana in Moga district. Baghapurana resident Rinku, 31, who was seriously injured, was taken to the Dr Mathura Dass Pahwa civil hospital here.

Jatinder Singh Khaira, senior superintendent of police (SSP); Harjit Singh Pannu, superintendent of police (detective); and Balwainder Singh, deputy superintendent of police, Baghapurana; reached the spot with other senior officials and recorded statements of local residents.

According to witnesses, Gursewak, Gurpreet and Rinku were travelling on a motorcycle from Rajeana to Budh Singh Wala. Sources said that when they reached near a bridge over a drain, some armed people came there on some vehicles and hit their motorcycle. When they fell to the ground, the assailants attacked them with sharp-edged weapons.

Khaira said police were investigating the matter. “However, we are waiting for any ‘relevant’ statement to register a case,” the SSP claimed.
