Four days after a clash occurred between two groups in Kapurthala Modern Jail, one of the rival group in a possible revenge attack injured two inmates on Thursday.

The two under trial prisoners, identified as Jatinder Singh alias Balal ,30, of Balala village and Satinder Singh alias Sonu ,26, of Flahi village in Hoshiarpur, were injured during the clash. Jatinder is booked under Sections 307 (attempt to murder) while Satinder is behind bars on murder charges.

The attack was to take revenge from the two.

“The clash took place at around 8 am on Thursday when the inmates were coming out from barracks,” a jail official said.

Senior medical officer (SMO), Anoop Singh said, “Both inmates have received multiple injuries and fracture on arms and legs.”

Station house officer (SHO) Kotwali police station Joginder Singh informed that on basis of complaint by Jatinder Singh, a case has been registered against seven persons .

The accused have been identified as Sukhwinder alias Saunki, Rahul Sood, Shinda, Bhinda, Maninder, Raaju, Mannu and some unidentified persons.

A case under Sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 324 (hurt by dangerous weapons) and 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against the accused.

On Sunday, a scuffle broke out between two groups on the jail premises. Three inmates including Shiv Karan, Happy Kumar and Sandeep Singh were injured during the fight.

The assailants, Sonu, Ajju, Sonu Balal, Kala Plahi and Prabhu, all under trial prisoners, were booked under Sections 323 and 324 of the IPC.

WEAK SECURITY ARRANGEMENTS

As per information the fight lasted for over half an hour and around 10 inmates thrashed Jatinder and Satinder with iron roads and bricks. But none of the officials came to know about the fight for 30 minutes until one inmate informed the security personnels. Sources said that even some prisoners pulled the siren bell thrice immediately after the fight. But still displaying a laid-back attitude the officials reached late on the spot. Later, a team of jail officials, led by superintendent of police (SP) Kulwinder Singh Thiara brought the situation under control, an official said.

“The attack was executed done with the help of jail staff,” one of the victim Jatinder claimed.

“Few days ago I had told the warden that the rival group was planning to attack us. But he did not pay heed to it,” said Jatinder.

Meanwhile, the SP claimed, “We are investigating about why the jail staff took time to reach the spot.”

“The inmates had a scuffle in the morning. As the jail is undergoing construction, the inmates reportedly acquired the material for the attack from the construction matter. Inquiry in the incident has been started,” Thiara said.
