The police have busted a scam of stealing diesel from the railway yards and further selling it at different fuel stations in the state. The police have booked four persons and recovered a tanker containing 10,000-litre diesel near Sahnewal.
The police arrested the two accused when they were on their way to Patiala to sell diesel which they have stolen from the dump of the railways. The police also found the involvement of employees of railway in stealing the diesel.
Inspector Prem Singh, in-charge at the CIA staff, said the police have arrested the accused from a checkpoint near Sahnewal following a tip-off. When the police enquired the accused he failed to show any document.
When the police posed harsh the accused confessed that they used to steal diesel from the railway yards in collision with railway employees and used to sell it to filling stations and factories.
The police have also found that the accused have installed fake number plate on the vehicle.
The accused has been identified as Noordeen of Malerkotla, Rajinder Singh of Patial, Zafar of Malerkotla and Rajesh of Sangrur. Noordeen and Rajinder were arrested by the police and two are still absconding.
A case has been registered against the accused under section 409, 420, 473, 120 B of the IPC and section 7 of the Essential Commodities Act.
Singh said more important information has been expected from the accused during investigation.
