Two kidney rackets were on in Punjab

Two kidney rackets - of arranging donors and recipients on commission basis and showing them as related based on fake IDs - were on in Punjab before the local police busted one on July 31. One of the alleged kingpins, Junaid Ahmed Khan (now in the Kapurthala jail), once worked for Lucknow-based Gaurav Misra, who is now a rival.

From Jalandhar's National Kidney Hospital, the investigation now will move to a Ludhiana hospital, where one of Junaid's arrested aides, Sabur Ahmed Khan, had undergone kidney transplant. Dr Rajesh Aggarwal and his wife, Deepa, owners of the Jalandhar hospital, continue to evade arrest after the court denied them bail on September 3.

Earlier, Junaid worked for Misra, who had brought him to the hospital to donate a kidney. He got only `3.5 lakh for a kidney, while Misra pocketed `10 lakh. A shocked Junaid started working independent from Misra and a deal he struck with a Ludhiana couple turned him into gang leader's business rival.

The couple required a kidney, so Junaid sent them to Sabur Khan. He also arranged a donor, Sudha of Ludhiana, who underwent surgery at National Kidney Hospital. Sudha is one of seven donors whose names have come out in the racket. Police sources say she was picked up from her house and let off after few hours of questioning, since the surgery papers were recovered only later from the hospital.

No sign of Aggarwals

On Monday, a local court dismissed the bail applications of National Kidney Hospital coordinator Sadhna and Harwinder, who worked as assistant at Sunder Lab, a collection centre of Deepa Aggarwal's Dr Lal Path Lab located at Garha Road in the city. Police, so far, have only identified some possible hideouts of the Aggarwals but failed to catch them.
