At least two people, including a woman, were killed and more than 15 people got injured in vehicle pile-ups on national highway 1 near Raipur Roran and Namaste chowk on the outskirt of Karnal city early on Sunday morning.
The police said the number of deceased may increase. The deceased have not been identified yet and the injured were admitted at hospitals. According to the police the accident took place due to dense fog (smog mixed with fog) early morning and at least 30 vehicles collided one after other at two locations in Karnal.
“Two deaths have been reported one each at Raipur Roran and near grain market chowk of Karnal city”, Shamsher Singh , Highway police station in-charge told the Hindustan Times.

According to the weather analysts the smog is mixed with fog and moisture in the morning and reduces the visibility.
“Yes it is smog and we have already issued instructions to the people that they should wear glasses while driving as it causes irritation in the eyes and lead to accidents. Also visibility in the morning reduced to only 50 to 100 meters”, Sham Singh Chauhan, weather analyst of Central Soil Salinity Research Institute Karnal told Hindustan Times.
