Two teenaged friends drowned in the Sutlej river on Monday.

The deceased have been identified as Dharamveer (14), a student of Class 8, and Sunil Yadav, a 19-year-old student of BCom (final year), both residents of Gagan Nagar here.

The duo had reached the riverbank near Ladhowal along with 25 others to immerse an idol of Goddess Durga. Before the ceremony, Dharamveer entered the water for taking a dip. When he started drowning, Sunil jumped into the river to save his friend, but he also drowned.

People tried to save the boys by throwing ropes, but to no avail. The police, with the help of local divers, fished out the bodies and sent them to the civil hospital for a post-mortem.

Sub-inspector Varinder Singh, posted at Ladhowal police station, said the bodies had been handed over to the families after the post-mortem.

Dharamveer's father Lakshmi Narayan and Sunil's father Tirloki Nath, who hail from Etawah (Uttar Pradesh), are labourers. They said the children had been good in studies and were being educated despite all odds.
