A rickshaw puller and a labourer were found murdered at two separate places in the city here on Monday. Rajesh Kumar from Bihar was found dead at Fauji Colony of Sherpur.
The body of a rickshaw puller, Amarjit Singh alias Babbi (40), was found under the railway over bridge near the bus stand, opposite to hotel of senior Akali leader Amarjit Singh Bhatia, while labourer Rajesh Kumar (32) was found murdered in Fauji Colony in the Sherpur area. The police have initiated investigations in both cases.
Babbi was a resident of local Dr BR Ambedkar Nagar, while Rajesh Kumar hailed from Bihar.
The killers had slit the throat of Babbi with a sharp-edged weapon. The locals alerted police on spotting the body lying near railway track. DCP Gurpreet Singh Toor, ADCP (city-3) Joginder Singh, ADCP (crime) Harjinder Singh, ACP (west) Gurpreet Kaur Purewal and forensic experts from police have started investigation.
The murderers decamped with the rickshaw, which Babbi had purchased a few days back. The police have recovered a blood-stained sharp-edged weapon from new scooter market, around 20 metre from the spot where the body was found.
According to DCP Gurpreet Singh Toor, it can be assumed that the victim had offered resistance and tried to run away as bloodstains were found at some distance from the crime spot.
The deceased was attending a religious function at Dr Ambedkar Nagar on Sunday night and left the place after someone hired his rickshaw to the bus stand.
"There was only an underwear on his person. The killers might have known the victim. Another motive behind the killing could be robbery as the rickshaw and other belongings of the victim are missing," said the DCP.
"As per the information collected from acquaintances of the victim, he was unmarried. His father is an ex-serviceman and is visually impaired. The victim's brother has gone out of Punjab for some medical treatment. The police have been working on the case," he added.
At Fauji Colony of Sherpur, Rajesh Kumar from Bihar was found dead. He lived in a rented accommodation in the area. The police are suspecting his friend Ashok's hand in murder.
Inspector Davinder Choudhary, SHO, police station, Focal Point, said Rajesh was working as a labourer in a factory. His friend Ashok had come to Ludhiana just a week ago and was living with him.
Prima facie it appears that Rajesh and Ashok entered into a scuffle on some issue on Sunday night. Ashok reportedly threw him from the roof and Rajesh died on the spot.
The police have registered a case against Ashok Kumar, who is at large.
