Those arrested have been identified as Pushpinder Singh, alias Noni, a resident of Rama Mandi, Jalandhar, and NRI Tarwinder Singh, alias Tally, who hails from Tut Kalan village in the district, said Jalandhar senior superintendent of police (SSP) Yurinder Singh Hayer, who was accompanied by Kapurthala SSP Inder Bir Singh.

The absconding accused are Rajinder Singh, alias Mintoo, of Fatehgarh Sahib and Palwinder Singh, alias Pinda, of Nihaluwala village (Shahkot).

Hayer said UK-based Tarwinder had arrived in Punjab on March 10 to settle a score with a dance group's manager, who had a dispute with his (Tarwinder's) dancer girlfriend. On March 13, Tarwinder, Rajinder and Palwinder fired at the manager at Kharar and snatched the injured victim's weapon, the SSP said.

Pushpinder, who was earlier convicted in a murder case, was released on 28-day parole from Kapurthala jail on March 15, the SSP said, adding that Rajinder and Palwinder were facing cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Hayer said all four accused went to Haveli restaurant for dinner on Sunday night. Pushpinder went to the toilet to consume a drug and tried to escape when he was spotted by the ASI.

"During the scuffle between Pushpinder and the ASI, the other accused came in a Verna car and opened fire at the cop before fleeing," the SSP added.

Hayer said Pushpinder was heading a gang of drug peddlers, five of whose members, identified as Surinder Pal Singh, Gagandeep Singh, Navin Saini, Pardeep Sharma and Varun, were arrested along with him from Rama Mandi with 1kg heroin and four weapons. A pistol was recovered from Tarwinder, who was arrested from Jahagir di Sarra village, Nakodar.

The car used in the crime belonged to Tarwinder and is yet to be recovered, the SSP said.

Meanwhile, Pushpinder was admitted to a private hospital in Jalandhar with broken legs and other injuries. SSP Yurinder Singh claimed that Pushpinder got injured when he fell into a pit while trying to flee from the police.

Eight persons were arrested on Wednesday for harbouring Tarwinder Singh after the ASI's murder. They were identified as Balbir Singh of Tut Kalan village (Nakodar), Amarjit Singh of Mallian Kalan village (Nakodar), Balwant Singh of Kang Sahib Rai village (Nakodar), Swaran Singh and Resham Singh of Nihaluwal village (Shahkot), Charanjit Singh of Kotla Suraj Mall village (Shahkot), and Amarjit Singh and Joga Singh of Mallupur village (Shahkot).
