The Tarn Taran police claimed to have arrested two robbers after an exchange of fire late on Saturday evening. Two of them, however, managed to flee.

Balraj Singh of Khara village and Ranjit Singh Rana of Tarn Taran, who are under arrest, were planning a robbery in the town along with their accomplices Ghulla of Rataul village and Baljinder Singh of Khara. The police swung into action soon after getting a tip-off in this regard.

Tarn Taran SSP Manminder Singh said a police team led by DSP Daljit Singh Dhillon and SP (operations) Manmohan Singh laid a naka at the Kakka Kandiala railway crossing. When signalled to stop, the four armed robbers, who were coming from the Tarn Taran bypass, opened fire at the police party. More than 25 rounds were exchanged during the encounter, which lasted for three-and-a-half hours. Balraj suffered a bullet injury in his foot.

Two .32-bore revolvers, five live cartridges and seven shells were recovered from Balraj and Ranjit. The SSP said the two were also involved in the recent murder of a granthi, Sukhchain Singh, in Tarn Taran. The granthi was killed when he resisted the attempt of robbers to take away a motorcycle.

Manminder said the gang was active in the area and Balraj had earlier been booked in connection with various cases of robbery. Raids are on to nab their accomplices.
