ULBs owe Rs 2.94 crore to state for street lights power bill

Replying to a question by Kullu legislator Maheshwar Singh, urban development minister Sudhir Sharma on Friday said around 10 urban local bodies (ULBs) owe Rs 2.94 crore to the state as electricity bill of street lights.
There are 10 urban local bodies, including six nagar panchayats, three nagar parishads and Shimla municipal corporation.
Bilaspur nagar parishad owes the highest of Rs 84.85 lakh to the state for electricity bill for street lights, while Shimla MC owes Rs 24.09 lakh.
The minister also said that tax collection was halted in Bilaspur nagar parishad.
Sharma said developmental funds were not used to pay off the electricity bill in any urban local bodies and the bills were paid by tax recovery and resource mobilisation. He also assured to look into the matter to decrease the power tariff for street lights. He added power tariff for commercial usage was Rs 4.95 and street light charges were Rs 4.70.
