Even as Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) prepares to stage a protest against the Border Security Force (BSF) on the drug issue, the border force has claimed to have made the highest seizure of narcotics from the Punjab frontier of the international border along Pakistan this year.
The BSF claimed to have made an all time high recovery of 362kg heroin along the border this year as against 322kg seized in 2013.
Also, the recovery of fake currency and the number of Pakistani smugglers and intruders shot down by the BSF along the Punjab border have gone up.
In 2013, BSF had shot down 7 Pakistani smugglers and intruders whereas this year the border force has gunned down 11 Pakistani smugglers and intruders.
Besides, the BSF seized about 33 Pakistani mobile phones and 52 Pakistani SIM cards during its operations along the fence.
Notably, the seizures of heroin by the BSF have seen a sharp increase in last five years, indicating both increase in smuggling as well as seizures.
BSF had seized 120kg heroin in 2009, 115kg in 2010, 67kg in 2011 and 288kg in 2012.
BSF KNOWS ITS ROLE: IG
Choosing not to comment on the proposed dharna of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) at various points along the border in Punjab, BSF IG (Punjab frontier) said, "I will not comment on any political activity. But I just want to assure everyone that the BSF is conscious about its role and knows its job well. We have made an all time high seizure this year and this speaks about the commitment and dedication of the BSF jawans show on the fence".
He said, "There is zero tolerance against the menace of cross-border smuggling and we are keeping an extra vigil to foil all attempts of smuggling made from across the fence. We are also in touch with other security agencies to curb this menace".
Asked if the proposed dharnas by the SAD along the border could dampen the morale of troops, IG Paliwal said, "The morale of all the officers and jawans of the BSF is very high and will stay that way. Nothing deters us".
Claiming that the deployment has been increased especially in view of winters, the BSF IG said, "Today many of the officers who are in administrative jobs are working along the border to increase the vigil. More manpower is pushed to the border so that no anti-national elements take advantage of the inclement weather".
He said that the force was regularly updating itself and more gadgets were being put into use to enhance the vigil.
