A 35-year-old undertrial has allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself with a piece of cloth tied to a staircase railing at Faridkot jail premises.

While jail authorities claimed that Lakhwinder Singh committed suicide on Monday, his family members declined to accept this.

The district and sessions judge has ordered a judicial inquiry into the death and deputed Faridkot chief judicial magistrate to probe the circumstances which led to the death of the jail inmate.

Nazar Singh, father of the deceased, said he had met his son on Sunday in the jail and assured him about his bail in Punjab and Haryana high court.

Lakhwinder of Bilaspur village in Moga district was arrested for the death of his wife Amandeep Kaur of Ferozepur, who died under mysterious circumstances in July 2011. Though his father and mother were also named as accused in the dowry death case, they got anticipatory bail.
