A proclaimed offender, Channan Singh, who was arrested under the excise act by the district police 15 days ago, died under mysterious circumstances in judicial custody at the subjail here on Saturday evening.

“While Channan was taking a bath on Saturday, he felt unwell. The staff rushed him to the civil hospital where doctors declared him dead,” said jail superintendent Iqbal Singh Brar.

The postmrotem report was awaited to know the exact reason of death.

Channan, a resident of Bagha Purana, had been booked on August 9, 2008 but had not appeared in court. The court declared him PO on July 6, 2013.

“Channan was rearrested on May 15 and the court sent him in judicial custody,” said Anil Kumar, assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Moga city police station.

“We are awaiting the autopsy report; investigation is underway,” he added. Inquest proceedings were initiated and the body handed over to the family.
