An undertrial booked under the NDPS Act died at the local jail here on Saturday. Karnail Singh, 45, was booked by Giddarbaha police recently and was sent to the local jail two days ago. He was a resident of Ghagga village in Muktsar district.

Jail superintendent SP singh confirmed the death. "The undertrial was taken to the local civil hospital for treatment. The actual cause of death will be clear only after the post-mortem report," he added.

The death of another Karnail Singh, 24, who had been facing nine cases, including seven of attempt to murder, on April 17 had led to a protest by the jail inmates here, alleging that he had died due to negligence of the jail staff because he was not given treatment on time.
Deputy commissioner Ravi Bhagat had ordered an inquiry after inmates handed over a representation to the duty magistrate.

Meanwhile, IG jails Jagjeet Singh visited the Faridkot jail on Saturday to take stock of the situation. "Some inmates who were on a hunger strike ended their strike after meeting the IG," said the jail superintendent.

A few days ago, an undertrial had committed suicide by hanging himself on the jail premises.
