An undertrial outwitted a cop and fled from the court complex on Monday evening. The cop had accompanied the accused to an eatery on the court complex for lunch, where the latter made good his escape by making an excuse that he had to go relieve himself.

However, instead of informing the police post on the court complex, the cop kept trying to trace the accused for one-and-a-half hour, and informed the police post only after an unsuccessful search.

The police post on court complex registered a case under sections 223 and 224 of the IPC against the undertrial, Kulwant Singh of Bassiyan village of Raikot. The police also booked head constable Satnam Singh for negligence.

The accused, Kulwant Singh, was arrested by Raikot police around six months ago for drug peddling. He was lodged in Ludhiana central jail. A police party ferried him to court along with other jail inmates for hearing.

Head constable Satnam Singh was taking Kulwant back after producing him before the court, when the latter talked him into lunch. During lunch, the accused made an excuse that he needed to relieve himself, and went outside and fled.

After waiting for him for a few minutes, the head constable started a search and at last informed the police post.

Sub-inspector Rajesh Thakur, incharge at court complex police post, said the police had initiated efforts to arrest the accused.
