Drug addiction

Drug addiction claimed yet another life in Punjab as a 25-year-old unemployed youth from Satrana village near Patran succumbed to burn injuries a day after setting himself ablaze. The deceased has been identified as Gurjant Singh.

The local police said Gurjant was finding it difficult to make both ends meet as he was a drug addict as well as unemployed.

Yesterday, after an argument with his family members for not giving him money to buy his daily intoxicants, Gurjant set himself on fire. The family members tried to douse the flames but it was too late as he suffered major burn injuries.

Soon after the incident, he was brought to the Government Rajendra Hospital in a critical condition. The doctors referred him to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, where he succumbed to his injuries earlier in the day today.

Local doctors said Gurjant had suffered over 50 percent burn injuries and had little chance of survival. Investigating officer Narayan Singh said the deceased was unemployed and was habituated to intake of large doses of drugs. His wife, with whom he had had a love marriage, left him some time ago.

Local residents said the family was also reeling under a financial crunch.
