The UPA government will examine and take suitable action in consultation with Punjab on pending stock of PAU-201, Union minister of state for consumer affairs, food and public distribution KV Thomas assured a delegation headed by Patiala MP Preneet Kaur on Saturday.
Kaur met Thomas in New Delhi along with the delegation of rice sellers from Patiala and Bathinda districts.
An official statement said the representatives of the millers earlier met Kaur and submitted that they were being penalised without any fault on their part.
A committee under the chairmanship of additional secretary and financial advisor, department of food supplies and public distribution, had categorically recommended in the past to the committee of secretaries various options for disposal of such rice in the domestic market.
There are around 88 rice sellers from Patiala and Bathinda districts who were asked by the state government procurement agencies to accept the stocks of PAU-201 paddy (crop year 2009-2010) for milling purposes with the assurance that they would not be forced to stick to the prescribed quality norms while milling paddy of the said variety.
PAU-201 variety paddy has higher broken grain content and reddish hue due to which the FCI had not been accepting the rice resulting in losses to these millers along with penal action.
It was recommended that in case of loss because of difference in the cost of CMR and the price realized through such disposal should be shared by both the Centre and the state governments. But, till date, no tangible action had been taken on these lines.
