Extra cautious after the tension inside the Golden Temple on Diwali evening, the Amritsar police took no chances and decided to give an unprecedented security cover to Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, who visited the shrine to pay obeisance on Friday morning.
Although the deputy CM comes to the shrine every month and does get a security cover, on Friday, as soon as he entered the shrine, a thick security blanket was thrown around him. Apart from the regular staff of the deputy CM security, cops of Amritsar police were present in big number and kept a very close watch till the he was there.
Not only the cops in junior ranks were seen on duty, the entire cover was led by the city police commissioner Jatinder Aulakh himself. Various officers of the rank of ADCP and woman constables of the department were also present there.
A tight security ring was made around the deputy CM who had come to the shrine along with his wife and children.
Notably, during the protests inside the shrine on Diwali evening, slogans were not only raised against SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar and Akal Takht jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh, but also against the Badals.
Therefore, it seems, the cops never wanted to take any chance and detailed meeting was conducted on Thursday evening to plan security arrangements for the visit of Sukhbir Badal.
When contacted, Amritsar police commissioner Jatinder Aulakh said, “Yes security was beefed up for the visit. This was just done to take all sorts of precautions.”
A police official on condition of anonymity said, “Since there was lot of criticism of the Badals and the government during Sarbat Khalsa and Diwali evening, a tight security arrangement was ensured for the deputy chief minister.”
Apart from the police, the task force of the SGPC was also on an alert while Sukhbir Badal was inside the shrine.
