The officials of the municipal corporation here (MCB) demolished the upper portion of an unsafe building on the Railway road here on Sunday.

The building, owned by Congress councillor in MCB, Jagroop Singh Gill, was razed partially on orders of sub- divisional magistrate (SDM) Damanjeet Singh Mann after residents and traders, under the banner of the Railway Bazar Welfare Association, had approached the MCB expressing the fear that the building might collapse and cause loss of life and property. The SDM then ordered demolition of the first floor of the building.

Commissioner, MCB, Dalwinderjit Singh, said that the building has been razed partially on orders of the court. When asked about any data available with the MCB about unsafe buildings in the city, he said that he was not aware of any such data and would check the records on Monday, if any.

However, superintendent engineer, MCB, BD Singla said that there is no data available with the urban body about the unsafe buildings and they act only on the basis of complaints as was done in this case. The people had made representation to the corporation which was forwarded to the district magistrate, who had asked the SDM to look into the matter and the SDM court, after listening to both the parties, ordered demolition of the first floor of the building.

Gill said that as a law-abiding citizen, he had no objection to the demolition of the building as was ordered by the court.
