He peeped in through the window after nobody answered the door and saw the bodies of Rajdeep and the child.

The police said Daljit had left behind three copies of a suicide note, attached with photographs of his family. The note said he was working as an ambulance driver for a private hospital and was upset over patients who could not afford treatment.

He said he was depressed after seeing videos of militants killing innocent people in Iraq.

Clarifying that nobody was responsible for the deaths, he requested that his property, cash and other items be given to his brother.

The note revealed that Daljit had attempted to end his life earlier too. But, he wrote, his wife had then counselled him. Sources in the village said Daljit was running a power inverter shop, which he later sold off.

Khamano station house officer Mohammad Jameel said a preliminary investigation showed that it was a case of suicide and circumstances indicated that Daljit had killed his wife and son. He said the bodies had been sent to the civil hospital mortuary.

A villager, Bhupinder Singh, said Daljit’s mother Lakhbir Kaur had been killed by his uncle when Daljit was about five years old.
