A farmer committed suicide by taking poison on Thursday at Kokri Kalan village under Dharamkot subdivision, 29 km from this district headquarters. Victim Gurinder Singh was 30.

The man’s father, Baljit Singh, said that his son had been upset for the past several days because of a low wheat output from his field. “The family members tried to tell him there was nothing to worry but depression forced him to end his life,” he said.

The family said Gurinder Singh had gone to his field on Thursday morning and took poison there. “After some time, when I got there and found him unconscious, we moved him to a private hospital in Moga, where doctors referred him to Dayanand Medical Collage and Hospital, Ludhiana, where he was declared dead,” said Baljit Singh.

Assistant sub-inspector Desh Raj of the Ajitwal police station said the farmer’s family had claimed his body after autopsy and inquest proceedings were on based on the statement of the victim’s father.
