People's Party of Punjab (PPP) on Thursday urged mayor Bakshi Ram Arora to think seriously about Amritsar's development and initiate its transformation by putting into practice his experience gained from a visit to Bakersfield in the USA, starting with his own ward.

PPP district president Manmohan Singh Gumtala and youth leader Sandy Randhawa said that Arora's first visit abroad left him highly impressed with the system abroad, making him realise the shortcomings in the system back home. "However, there is no point in harping on these things unless one intends to change the scenario prevailing here," they said.

The duo urged the mayor to begin the clean-up by taking stock of the state of affairs in his own ward. "There are several buildings in his ward where the parkings have been converted into showrooms, which results in severe traffic bottlenecks along the main roads," said Randhawa. He added that the footpaths in Arora's ward were encroached upon in violation of court orders.

The PPP leaders urged the mayor to provide details of tax payers, defaulters and commercial buildings in his ward. "The mayor should tell what action has been taken against the defaulters and why the buildings of defaulters have not been sealed yet," said Gumtala.
