A 59-year-old constable with the UT Police was killed after a Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) bus collided head-on with his motorcycle near the light point of Sectors 27/28 on Tuesday around 8am.
The victim Kesar Singh was deployed as a driver in the wireless workshop of Traffic Lines, Sector 29. The traffic on the stretch had been moving on half the road as there had been another accident on one side of the road.
The victim was returning to his residence in Sector 42 after finishing his duty. The rashly-driven bus was headed to Sector 29. Police was called in and rushed the victim to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Sector 32, where the duty doctors declared him brought dead due to injury.
The bus driver Jaspreet Singh has been arrested and booked under Sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 337 (causing hurt by endangering life or personal safety of others) and 304-A (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code at Sector 26 police station. The body of the victim was handed over to his family by his parents after postmortem.
His son Sarabjeet Singh said that the traffic was blocked and his father could have been saved had the police acted more responsibly.
