The 19-year-old Uttarakhand youth whose body was found in a hotel near bus stand, was killed by his friend as he was envious of him for having a relationship with a girl that he was also interested in, the police said on Thursday.
The accused, Deewan Singh, also a native of Uttarakhand was arrested from the railway station on Wednesday. He will be produced before a court on Thursday.
Giving details at a press conference on Wednesday, deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Nilambari Vijay Jagdale said the victim, Parkash Singh Rana, was found dead at Hotel Park Blue, near bus stand on July 18. Police questioned the hotel manager, Avtar Singh, who revealed that the victim was accompanied by a couple and they had rented two rooms. But the couple was missing, following which a manhunt was launched and the woman, Kamaljit Kaur, was arrested on July 20, she added.
"Kaur told the police that she was in another room, and was not aware what transpired between Deewan and Parkash. Therefore, a team was dispatched to Uttarakhand to nab Deewan. However, the accused was arrested from the Ludhiana railway station," she added.
"During interrogation, the accused confessed to have murdered Parkash by strangulation at the hotel, as he was in a relationship with a Ludhiana girl that he was also interested in," the DCP claimed, adding that after the murder, both Deewan and Kaur fled the hotel.
A case of murder is already registered at Division Number 5 police station.
