The ongoing strike of vegetable wholesalers and commission agents against alleged fleecing by parking contractor LRY Construction entered the third day on Thursday.

Demanding the cancellation of contract of the parking contractor at vegetable market, the protestors alleged that he had been overcharging the vegetable vendors as well as vehicles entering the market.

A delegation of commission agents also visited Mandi Board secretary Deepinder Singh in Chandigarh and demanded immediate cancellation of contract of the parking contractor at vegetable market on Thursday.

The delegation explained to the official as to how the contractor was fleecing the visitors to the vegetable market. The delegation alleged that the contractor was operating in collusion with the Mandi Board officials in Ludhiana.

Amarveer Singh, general secretary of Punjab Fruits and Vegetable Commission Agents Association, said the Mandi Board officials had failed to take action against the contractor.

He said the Mandi Board secretary had assured them of meeting the agriculture minister on Friday and added that action would be taken against the contractor.

Meanwhile, most of the vegetables, including ginger, garlic and brinjal, have started disappearing from the market.

When contacted, Raju of LRY Construction said he had followed all rules before the contract was allotted to him. "There is no fleecing of visitors or vehicles carrying vegetables inside the market" Raju said.
