The 81st edition of Kila Raipur Sports Festival, also known Rural Olympics, kicked off on a vibrant note on Friday even as the spectator turnout was comparatively low.

As compared to the previous years when popular bullock cart races were part of the games, the presence of foreigners in the stadium was negligible. However, the organisers are hopeful that visitors’ count will go up in the next two days.

The games commenced in the morning after the customary prayers and inauguration by Ludhiana additional deputy commissioner (ADC) Mohinderpal Gupta.

On the opening day, ‘dog race’ turned out to be the main attraction, while martial arts, bhangra, daredevil stunts, athletics and hockey matches also remained the cynosure of all eyes.

A spectator from Ludhiana, Lakhwinder Singh, said, “The organisers should introduce new events that can attract crowds. Earlier, there used to be a variety of daredevil stunts, but today there were only a few. I am hoping for some exciting events over the next two days.”

Secretary of the organising body, Grewal Sports Association, Balwinder Singh Grewal, said horse race, kabaddi, tractor race, athletics, cycle race, tug of war, old men’s race and other daredevil stunts will be organised on Saturday. Local member of Parliament Ravneet Singh Bittu will be the chief guest on Saturday.
