Commuters plying on the under construction Chandigarh-Kharar road will not get any relief from traffic woes for next one-and-a-half-year as work of the elevated road on the segment is expected to complete by December 2018.

Since the pillars for the flyover are being constructed in middle of the road, the traffic has been restricted to single road on both the sides. The monsoon season is only expected to add to misery as officials of Larsen and Toubro (L&T), the firm contracted with the project, said that the repair and construction of side lanes will begin only after the rains.

To facilitate traffic flow an additional land corridor of 22.5 metre has to be acquired on both the side. The file regarding the same is with the National Highway Authority of India.

Mohali sub district magistrate (SDM) RP Singh said, “We have completed initial process of land acquisition and have sent the report to the NHAI. Now, the authority have to review it, in case they ask for any change that will done.”

Meanwhile, company officials said that they were facing problem due to delay in land acquisition process in spite of removing 600 structures around the project site. They added that the land corridor is required to construct two lane road on both the side of the construction to ease traffic pressure.

They further added that haphazard parking add to problems. A traffic cop when enquired about the problem, said " We manage the traffic for 15-hour a day. Commuters hardly co-operate with us ." Only five cops manage traffic along the stretch.

The problem only adds to traffic jams which continue for two hours during peak hours.

Kirpal Singh of Daun Majra, who runs a shop at Mundi Khara said, "It takes around an hour to reach at my residence which is just 6 km away."

What is the  Project

A 3.2 KM elevated road from Sunny Enclave to BSNL chowk, Kharar with three vehicle under passes is to be constructed. The project was awarded to L&T and the construction started in July 2016. More than one lakh vehicles pass through the road.
