“I will take up this matter with the chief minister (Manohar Lal Khattar). During previous meetings, I had warned the SP to work properly. I will not attend the meeting of the grievances’ committee till SP Kalia is here,” Vij said later.

Kalia refused comments. “Media knows everything, so I don’t feel the need to comment on the issue.”

It’s not immediately known why the health minister has been cut up with the officer but Friday’s trigger was regarding a complaint on bootleggers.

Representatives of the Saheed Bhagat Singh Naujawan Sabha, an NGO, informed Vij during the meeting that illegal sale of alcohol was rampant in Ratia, bordering Punjab.

The minister asked Kalia, who was seating next to him, to explain and the officer replied that the accused resume their illegal business after getting out of jail.

She said about 2,500 cases have been registered against people illegally selling alcohol and police were keeping a strict vigil.

But Vij was not satisfied with the officer’s reply. He told her that police were also involved in the illegal activity.

Kalia countered the minister, prompting an angry Vij to repeatedly ask her to leave the venue.

“SP Kalia is showing an irresponsible attitude which is not good. Representatives of an NGO, whose complaint I was listening to, told me they are not getting any help from police. I will take up this issue with the CM,” Vij said after walking out of the meeting.
